Surat Al-Baqarah: Ayat 246
“Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, ‘Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah?’ He said, ‘Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if fighting was prescribed for you?’ They said, ‘And why should we not fight in the cause of Allah when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?’ But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.”
Glory be to Allah. As I read this verse and went through the commentary that described the condition of the Children of Israel at the time, I could not help but look at the similarities to the Muslim Community of today. We are so disjointed, so self-centred and insincere that we have no direction as a community whatsoever.
The following verse reinforces it:
Surat Al-Baqarah: Ayat 247
“And their prophet said to them, ‘Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king.’ They said, ‘How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?’ He said, ‘Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favour] and Knowing.’”
Is this not a clear reflection of us? Lacking the understanding and willpower to bring forth the rightful leaders. Rather we look at worldly credentials and end up with leaders who have nothing but self-centred interests.
The Ummah lacks a spine. And even if a great leader were to be present among us today, there is little they could do because we would not follow him.
How long shall our brothers and sisters be overrun, oppressed, incarcerated, tortured, murdered, raped until we do something for them? We make duas for them once a week if they are lucky yet not even a tear goes down our cheeks.
Sincerely we have forgotten the Prophet’s (SAW) hadith: “The similitude of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever.” [Muslim]
Where is the fever oh Muslim brother and sister?
We need not bear arms; all we need to do is to return to the straight path and understand Islam as it was taught to us. We need to be at the forefront of championing the rights of not only our Muslim brothers and sisters but also the rest of humanity and the greater realm of creatures as taught to us by the Prophet (SAW).
And indeed there is hope:
Surat Al-Anfal: Ayat 53
“Allāh will never change the state of the people until they change themselves.”
A verse that we have all probably read or heard before. However, I hope the recent events will have created a crack through which it can pass through into our hearts and implant the seed of change. Ameen.
