Judging someone or something by their negative traits is always the easiest thing to do. From Isa (AS) to Muhammad (SAW) our prophets perfected their ability to see the positive when others did not. And as much we may know the quote: 'Do not judge a book by its cover.', we rarely implement it. This is the perfect example where experience is the differentiator between having information and having knowledge.
We have to learn to see beyond the cover and benefit from interacting with people on a much deeper level to marvel at the beauty that lies in them, rather than brush them away for what they may seem to be at face value. I may still be quick to judge but I have learnt that people always have some good in them.
You may judge someone as a druggie but they have brought someone to Islam through the little knowledge they know but what have you done?
You may judge someone because of their haircut or clothes, yet they regularly wake up for Fajr. How about you?
You may judge a lady for not being a hijabi but she is making the effort to memorize the Quran on a daily basis. How about you?
These are just some of many scenarios where we may be quick to judge and actually put off someone from the beauty of Islam. Remember that you and I are not perfect, that hidaya (guidance) comes only from Allah so let us be thankful and embrace humanity with a smile as we share with them the sweetness of Eeman. Let us actually learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW), who was sent to all humanity and felt hurt and sorrow for the people that did not accept Islam rather than hatred. Let us not turn people away with our arrogance for truly the Prophet (SAW) said: "No one who has the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” Who gave us the right to judge whether a person is righteous or not? Can we see into their hearts? Can we see into the future?
If we have been blessed with a little bit of knowledge and guidance then let us be careful and humble so that we may bring others to it. This is Islam, the religion for humanity.
